Cherry Platter

Cherry Platter

CG-010

Wood Cherry
Turned May 2026
Finish Shellac friction polish and microcrystalline wax
Dimensions 7½" × 1½"

A shallow platter in cherry, sourced from the Kent Woodturners wood store. The blank had a significant crack on one side which dictated much of the design - the foot shape had to work around it, and the shallowness steered me towards a platter rather than a bowl.

Cherry platter - the warm, honey tones of the grain

One crack I was able to repair, but the other called for a different approach to the foot. These are the compromises that make each piece unique - the wood tells you what it wants to be, and you learn to listen.

Despite the challenges, the cherry came up beautifully. The warm, honey-coloured grain has a subtle shimmer under the shellac and wax finish, and the shallow form makes it a practical piece for fruit or bread.
