A simple tea light holder, only 4cm tall and around 4.5cm across, with a line burned around the outside edge of the top.

The small ash tea light holder, with a burned line around the rim

It was turned from a small branch given to me by a friend at Kent Woodturners, and I think it’s ash. Because it was turned as a spindle, with the grain running along its length, the wood pattern is quieter than on a bowl or a pot.

Ash is prized for being both strong and springy, and that has kept it in some surprising places. The Morgan Motor Company still builds the frames of its cars from ash, a tradition carried over from the days of coachbuilding.

Finished with microcrystalline wax.
